When you look out into your backyard, are you loving what you see? If you’re at the point where you can’t even see the finer details of the lawn like the lush green color or the fullness that creates a cohesive green blanket across your property, it’s time to show your lawn some love. Read on to learn a few ways to spruce up your yard without a lot of extra effort.

Mow It on the Tallest Setting

You might feel tempted to keep your grass short, but try to mow it at 3 inches on your mower. Keeping your grass taller provides a number of benefits, including:

  • Fights off disease
  • Produces stronger root systems
  • Prevents sunlight from getting to the weeds
  • Improves color
  • Keeps the turf denser (which also destroys weeds)
  • Conserves water

Another benefit of mowing the grass taller is that you don’t have to work as hard to keep your lawn looking great!

Take Care of It During Winter

Even though your grass is dormant during the winter, you can still take care of your lawn when it’s cold outside. Avoid too much foot traffic, because that can damage brittle grass. Although your grass is hardy, walking on it too much will make it more difficult to rebound in the spring.

Aerate just before the first frost. The reason is that aerating gets rid of any compaction that occurred over the summer. It allows oxygen to reach the roots, and it helps get rid of any pesky bugs or pests that may want to hibernate over the winter.

Once you’re done aerating, fertilize your lawn with the right fertilizer for your soil type. Your grass roots will soak up the nutrients and store them over the winter, thereby giving you a burst of green come springtime.

Don’t Overwater

Yes, there is such a thing as overwatering your lawn. Too much water causes the soil to lose oxygen, which makes the roots weak. Extra water also attracts bugs like mosquitoes, and it may cause fungus to grow and take over the lawn.

Your lawn won’t need more than 2 inches of water per week, even on the hottest days, to maintain its lush, green, carpeted look. Keep in mind that your lawn’s watering schedule needs to be changed based on the season, how much water it gets from rain, and the temperatures outside.
