How many times have you heard, or even said yourself, “New Year, New Me”? The ringing in of a new year often brings many people making their resolutions to become a newer and better version of themselves when the clock strikes midnight. So start the next new year not with lofty goals of a complete self overhaul, but with a few reminders of ways to be kind to yourself. This is a bit different from simply making New Year resolutions that won’t make it past mid-January. It’s about considering wellness as a gateway to fulfillment.

Sustainable wellness is the kind that is achieved through long-standing personal change and devotion; it’s about figuring out what constitutes a healthy and happy lifestyle for you and going for it. Beyond going to the gym and buying the newest trendy cookbook, we’ve got something that will help you achieve your health and wellness goals for the New Year.

The secret to maximizing the efforts you put in for a long term, fresh start? Saunas and hot tubs! Below are just a few tips to help you improve your health and wellness throughout the year ahead.

Exercise

You can join a gym, but sadly not even a gym membership is enough to keep you motivated. Or at least, it isn’t for most people. As it turns out, 82% of gym members only go to the gym once a week, while 63% of memberships end up going unused. A 2018 survey even showed just how much money has been wasted by Americans who don’t use their gym memberships – a whopping $1.8 billion.

Don’t be another statistic. Make exercise and working out work out for you. For some people, it might be the body pain from the gym that prevents them from going back, but that’s where the saunas and hot tubs come in.

Want something akin to a Swedish massage after a gruesome workout session? Turn the hot tub on and go in for a soak. The warm feel of the water will relax you so much, while the jets help with muscle recovery. Even sitting in a sauna is relaxing on your sore muscles.

Get Some Shut-Eye

Adults need about 8 hours of sleep a night to thrive, which doesn’t include a restless night of sleep. Sound sleep is what helps the body feel refreshed. Soak in the hot tub about 30 minutes before bed to get the best sleep of your life. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world. Want to make it even more soothing? Add some aromatherapy to your hot tub and you’re sure to fall into a deep sleep you’ve been longing for.

Detoxify

Whether you’re aware of this or not, your body is exposed to numerous toxins throughout the day. A lot of the everyday items we use have chemicals in them that can be harmful to the body through continual exposure. The heat and warmth of hot tubs/saunas create a relaxing environment and causes you to sweat quite a bit, which allows your body to get rid of some of these toxins. This detoxification process rejuvenates your body and helps you with your wellness journey.

Meditate

If there’s one thing the past year has taught us, it’s that to survive hard times, we must take care of our mental health. Making time for meditation throughout your day will help you get more in tune with yourself and put you in a better frame of mind to take on the day ahead. When enjoying your hot tub surrounded by nature be sure to take a few minutes to hone in on the sights, smells and sounds of nature and realign your inner self. Or, while you’re enjoying time in the sauna, turn your mind off and just focus on your breathing and expelling any negative energy. Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration is such an integral part of good health. According to the Mayo Clinic, men should be consuming 15.5 cups of fluids a day, while women should consume 11.5 cups. Dehydration can result in fatigue, headaches, and other discomforts, which can hinder you from getting done everything you need to throughout the day, or at least cause you to feel crummy while you are trying to accomplish the tasks at hand. If you are able to soak in your hot tub or relax in your sauna, also be sure you’re consuming enough water while doing so.
