Maintaining Your Hot Tub in Freezing Weather

When freezing temperatures are expected, it’s important to take action. Extra care needs to be taken in order to maintain your hot tub both during and after a hard freeze to avoid costly damage to the hot tub and its components.

Preparing Your Hot Tub for the Freezing Weather

In order to properly prepare your hot tub for the upcoming frigid temperatures, we recommend doing the following in order to protect it:

1. Keep Your Water Circulating. Moving water can’t freeze. So while it may seem like a good idea to drain your hot tub prior to the freezing temperatures, it’s actually counterproductive as there could be residual water in the equipment (think pipes, filters and jets) that could cause serious damage if the water isn’t properly circulated.

Because many newer pumps also have a freeze-protection mode that automatically kicks on after temperatures reach a certain degree, it’s important to keep the pump running. If your pump does not have that feature, then just be sure to continue to run the jets.

2. Keep Your Hot Tub Covered. By keeping your hot tub covered during inclement weather, you’re able to help further prevent the water from freezing while also protecting your heater and pump from having to work harder.

What If We Lose Power?

In the event of losing power, do not panic. Continue to keep your hot tub covered without disruption. Your equipment will not suffer damage if you’re out of power for minimal periods of time. Just keep it covered as that helps insulate the tub and keeps the water warm for as long as possible. Much like you wouldn’t keep opening a refrigerator if you lost power, don’t worry about opening the hot tub.
