What is Diatomacceous Earth?
“What earth?” That’s often the response we get when we talk to pool owners about their different filter options and diatomaceous earth. Many pool owners think that all filters are the same and are surprised to find out that filters use a variety of different materials. While there are pros and cons to each type, we want to focus specifically on diatomaceous earth.
So what is diatomaceous earth, and how does it work? Read on below to learn more about this type of filter and how your pool can benefit.
What is a Diatomaceous Earth Filter?
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a sedimentary rock that is ground up and used to filter water in a DE filter. The rock contains the fossilized remains of microscopic organisms called diatoms. These organisms are why DE can absorb and filter impurities from pool water.
The filter contains grids that are coated with DE powder. The DE powder traps debris very effectively, making a DE filter one of the best available when it comes to keeping your pool clean.
How Does a DE Filter Work?
A DE filter receives water from the pool pump and filters it through the grid coated with diatomaceous earth powder. This fine powder can capture impurities as small as 2 to 5 microns in size.
Over time, the DE filter will need to be cleaned. You do this by backwashing or running the water inside the filter in reverse. When you do, a canvas strainer bag will capture the old diatomaceous earth, and dirty water will go through to the sewer. You can then toss the DE so that it doesn’t clog city pipes.
You only need to backwash the filter every few months, and the grids can last for years. Once you backwash to clean the filter, you’ll add more DE powder to the grids and reassemble the filter. Sometimes, pool owners who use DE filters try to use a bit less DE powder than recommended in an effort to prevent clogging the skimmer.
The Benefits of a DE Filter
If you’re looking at pool filter options, you’ll quickly see that a DE filter is one of the best. It filters water much more effectively than any other filter and is compact in size, making it easy to find space for.
Also, a DE filter uses less power from the water pump to keep the system running smoothly. This can help you save money on electricity and make a difference in the environment.
